Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of softwood and fluff pulp, packaging paper and sustainable paper packaging solutions.
Klabin has obtained approval for new greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which aims to drive ambitious actions in the private sector by ensuring that companies establish science-based emissions reduction targets.
The commitment now considers a reduction of 42% in scopes 1 and 2 (scope 1 – own emissions; scope 2 – emissions related to purchased energy) by 2030, as well as another 42% in scope 3 (indirect emissions that occur in the value chain). The new NetZero target was also validated, which considers long-term decarbonization, through which the company will seek to reduce absolute GHG emissions from scopes 1 and 2 by 90% by 2050, and another 90% reduction in scope 3 emissions. All targets now consider 2022 as the base year for calculation [¹ and ²].
“Klabin is at a new stage of ambition and maturity, reflected in the approval of GHG emissions reduction targets by SBTi. This achievement reinforces our commitment to decarbonization beyond our factories. We have a solid commitment to sustainable growth and, increasingly, we seek to contribute effectively to the fight against global warming,” explains Francisco Razzolini, Klabin’s Director of Research and Development, Sustainability and Innovation.
Klabin has historically been reducing its emissions. The recent approval by SBTi places the company on a new level, which requires greater challenges by contemplating targets in scope 3, related to emissions originated by third parties, which are not directly controlled by the company. “We defend working together as the greatest potential for impactful actions and we will continue to seek to contribute to engaging our suppliers and customers, assisting them and sharing experiences from this process in seeking to reduce emissions in favor of advancing decarbonization,” concludes Razzolini.
